Phishing, also called “brand spoofing”, is the creation of email messages and Web pages that are replicas of existing, legitimate sites and businesses. These emails often ask for information such as credit card numbers, bank account information, SIN numbers and passwords. These emails usually have a link for you to click on which takes you to the fraudulent website that looks authentic.

The goal of criminals “phishing” is to lead consumers to believe that a request for information is coming from a legitimate company. In reality it is a malicious attempt to collect customer information for the purpose of committing fraud. If banking information or credit card numbers are gathered on these “fake” websites, your account could be wiped out or your credit card limit maxed out.

Do not reply to any email that requests your personal information or to call a number to give your information.

You can help protect yourself with these simple tips:

  • Unlike phishing e-mails, we will never ask you to verify personal information in response to an e-mail
  • Most fake communications convey a sense of urgency by threatening discontinued service
  • Many fraudulent e-mails contain misspellings, incorrect grammar, and poor punctuation
  • Links within the fake e-mail may appear valid, but deliver you to a fraudulent site
  • Phishing e-mails often use generic salutations like ‘Dear Customer’, or ‘Dear Account Holder’ instead of your name
  • The address from which the e-mail was sent is often not one from the company it claims to be
