For students, a school day is full of opportunities: a lesson that sparks curiosity, a friendship that builds confidence, a teacher’s encouragement that helps them keep going. But when a student is hungry, it can be much harder to focus on those moments. That is why Innovation Federal Credit Union’s School Meal Initiative is designed to support local schools in a practical, meaningful way: by helping provide free meal experiences that nourish students and strengthen communities.
The School Meal Initiative is a community-driven program that provides funding for free meal experiences such as pancake breakfasts, BBQs, hot lunch days, or support for existing school meal programs. Rather than creating a one-size-fits-all approach, the initiative is built to be locally led. Innovation’s Community Team provides high-level guidance, while local teams work directly with schools to understand needs, coordinate logistics, and help deliver the meal program in a way that fits each community.
Schools play a central role in the program too. They use the funding to purchase food and collaborate with local teams on planning and execution. Where schools already have nutrition or lunch programs in place, the initiative can help support and strengthen those efforts. This makes the program flexible, responsive, and focused on meeting students where they are.
The initiative has the potential to benefit K-12 or elementary schools across Saskatchewan and Alberta. The focus is on supporting schools in Innovation’s rural advice centre communities, where access to food programs and community resources is often more limited. While Innovation already invests in food security initiatives in many of its larger centres, the credit union recognizes there are fewer opportunities and supports available in smaller communities. By focusing on rural locations, it can help fill an important gap and ensure more children have access to nutritious meals so they can come to school ready to learn and succeed.
Through support for local rural schools, the program reflects Innovation’s commitment to being present where members, families, and students live, learn, and grow.
At its heart, the School Meal Initiative recognizes something simple but powerful: access to food can change the course of a school day. A meal can help a student arrive in class with more energy. It can make it easier to concentrate, participate, and learn. It can reduce stress for families and create a stronger sense of care and belonging at school. For some students, a shared breakfast or lunch may be more than a meal; it may be a reminder that their community is behind them.
The impact also extends beyond the classroom. By bringing schools, Innovation team members, and local partners together, the initiative creates opportunities for staff engagement and community connection. It gives local teams a way to volunteer, build relationships, and support a need that continues to grow in many communities: food security. Those connections matter because strong communities are built through consistent, practical support.
The School Meal Initiative is also an example of Innovation’s Responsible Banking™ philosophy in action. Responsible Banking means doing the right thing through ethical practices, transparency, co-operative principles, and community impact. As a member-owned co-operative, Innovation uses profits to make life better for members and the communities it serves. That includes sharing profits with members and reinvesting in local organizations, programs, and projects that help communities thrive.
When Innovation supports a school meal program, it is doing more than funding food. It is investing in students’ well-being, readiness to learn, and sense of possibility. It is helping schools create moments where students feel supported. It is helping families by easing one more pressure in a busy day. And it is showing how banking can be connected to something bigger: stronger students, stronger schools, and stronger communities.
Through the School Meal Initiative, Innovation Federal Credit Union is proud to help nourish young learners and support the communities that help them succeed. Because when students have what they need to focus, grow, and take part in their school day, the benefits can last far beyond the lunch table.
